A labiaplasty is a procedure that reshapes the labia.  Very often women are unhappy with the way their labia looks and there can be protruding tissue that makes exercise or sexual intercourse very uncomfortable.

This is the fastest growing procedure in aesthetic surgery and this is likely due to greater awareness of it through online activity.  Labiaplasty is an umbrella term that consists of 3 distinct procedures:

  1. Labia minora – this accounts for 85% of labiaplasty procedures and it involves reduction in the size of the inner labia. Many women feel that their inner labia protrude too much and they can be uncomfortable and interfere with exercise and sexual intercourse.   Several techniques exist to reduce the inner labia and I will choose the best procedure that suits your individual needs.
  2. Labia majora – this accounts for 5% of labiaplasty procedures and involves reducing the outer labia to give a more youthful appearance. Very often the outer labia can be enlarged and swollen and can interfere with self esteem.
  3. Clitoral hood reduction – this accounts for 10% of labiaplasty procedures and it deals with excess tissue that surrounds the clitoris. Many women do not like a baggy clitoral hood and by reducing it it not only improves the aesthetic but it can increase clitoral sensation.  This procedure is often carried out in conjunction with labia minora surgery

All types of labiaplasty procedures are carried out under local anaesthetic and take about 30-45 mins.

A labiaplasty is performed not just to improve the cosmetic appearance of the labia but it also helps reduce the discomfort and pain associated with having a prominent and protruding labia.

Downtime is a week and we strongly advise that you rest at home for the week.  It can be quite painful so it’s important that you limit your activity for 7 days and keep the area cool to limit the swelling.  The stitches are all dissolving and the swelling takes a couple of weeks to go down.  You can expect to be back to all normal activity after 4 weeks.
